A brand new city district is being realized on the docklands of Aarhus. The new district has been a long time coming, but now it is buzzing with construction and the first residents moved into their new apartments with ocean view in 2011. Over the coming years the development will continue with a number of exciting projects in the pipeline.
When the new city district on the water front of Aarhus is completed, it will have 7.000 residents and 12.000 jobs. Aarhus Docklands is both in terms of volume and vision among one of Europe's largest water front projects.
The vision includes that Aarhus Docklands must be for all citizens. The vision is based on two basic elements:
- Aarhus Docklands is to be an attractive part of the city and create a connection between the city and the Bay of Aarhus.
- The water front must be the recreational connection that marks the city's original shoreline and extends as a promenade stretching from the Riis Skov forest in the north to the Marselis forests in the south.
A Canal District
At the North Harbour a vibrant and diverse city district of canals will grow based on interesting architecture, environment-friendly construction, attractive public transportation, great public spaces, small local places and green spaces.
The new district is still only in its infancy, but the project is developing day by day.
